There are some fantastic opportunities for young adults of 12-18 to join the Cadets at Ty Llewellyn Detachment in Cardiff.
They parade at Ty Llewellyn Barracks, Morgan Street CF10 4FG between 1845hrs – 2100hrs every Monday and Wednesday night. The Army Cadets is a youth organisation, with military themed activities, encompassed within a Safe System of Training and CRB checks for all staff. They are a youth community group inspiring for young adults to achieve and seek new opportunities and experiences.
We partake in First Aid, the Duke of Edinburgh Scheme, Shooting, Navigation, BTEC Public Services, Skill at Arms (Weapon Training), Adventurous Actives and Fieldcraft. They also teach and encourage better citizenship skills and how to develop the youth into mature, responsible adults capable of demonstrating the key essential skills of future life.
They also attend an annual 2 week camp to a military training establishment for £80.00 per year which includes all food, accommodation, transport and a 2 day trip to Belgium. There is a small fee of £1.00 per person per night to be a member and there is a £20.00 administration fee if the Cadet wishes to stay (which will cover all their uniform and equipment). Most detachments (cadet groups) meet two evenings a week and there are weekend camps, courses and competitions about once a month.
Every summer there’s also annual camp, the highlight of the ACF year. This is where everyone in your area has the chance to go away to a military training area somewhere in the UK for either one or two weeks of the school summer holiday. You get to do lots of special activities that you might not be able to do on normal detachment nights. Things like rock climbing, sailing, archery, clay target shooting, abseiling and canoeing. You will also usually spend some time living out in the field, learning about real military skills and using them in mock ambush situations. You won’t be part of the Army, and no-one will ever put you under any pressure to join the Army when you’re older. But if you are considering a military career later on, being a cadet will give you a great head start. We give you a uniform free of charge, just like the one real soldiers wear. All you need to buy is a good pair of boots. Most of the activities are provided at very low cost or even free. If you’ve ever wanted to do The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, that’s something you can do through cadets. If you want to learn to play a musical instrument, we can help with that too. Your cadet activities can even count towards proper qualifications, which will look great when you’re applying for jobs or college. But above all, being an Army Cadet is about having fun and making friends. When it comes to action, adventure and excitement, it’s very hard to beat!
