CAN YOU BE THE FACE OF CYCLING IN CARDIFF?

25/06/2015

Cardiff residents are being given to chance to share what they love – and loathe – about cycling in the Welsh capital as part of an innovative project inspired by Danish towns and cities.

Bike Life sees transport charity Sustrans work with the city of Cardiff to learn more about how and why people ride their bikes in the city, and what more needs to be done to make cycling the norm for everyday shorter journeys.

On Tuesday June 30, a Mini Fiesta will take place in Bute Park (near to the entrance onto North Road by the Royal College of Welsh Music and Drama) from 7.30am until 11, with the highlight being two free BMX stunt shows taking place at 8.15 and 10 – so make sure to start your commute that little bit earlier for a special treat on the way to work.

Those riding through the park will have the opportunity to have their photo taken and share their experience of cycling in the city – and have the chance of becoming the face of cycling in Cardiff when the Bike Life report is published later this year.

There’ll be a free hot drink for those who share their thoughts on cycling in the capital and a pedal powered art spinner to keep everyone entertained.

Lindsey Curtis, Sustrans’ Area Manager for Cardiff, said, “We’ve seen an increase in the number of people cycling in Cardiff, and the Taff Trail remains an incredibly popular route for the commute and for leisure.

“In Danish cities, where cycling is the norm, listening to what those on bikes love – and what they would improve – were a crucial part of making their cities fit for cycling.

“So, if you want to be the face of cycling in Cardiff, why not come along and share your experiences.”

Cabinet Member for Transport, Planning and Sustainability, Cllr Ramesh Patel, said:  “We are delighted to be partnering with Sustrans on this important initiative. Enabling more people to switch to cycling for their commute and other daily journeys is a major strand of the Council’s transport strategy and our efforts to achieve the Local Development Plan target of at least 50% of all journeys to be made by sustainable modes of transport by 2026.

“Our participation in the Bike Life project will help us fully understand the state of cycling in Cardiff and allow us to learn what already works for cyclists and which areas we need to focus on and improve. This mini-fiesta is a great way for people to get involved with Bike Life and share their thoughts on cycling in the Welsh capital.”
