Cancer patients and their families in Wales are set to benefit from the fundraising efforts of one of Cardiff’s most popular luxury hotels.
Park Plaza Cardiff has raised £14,100 for Velindre Cancer Centre in the last twelve months, as part of a charitable partnership between the two organisations. Park Plaza had initially pledged to raise £10,000 for Velindre as part of the hotels 10th birthday celebrations throughout 2015, but following a year of fundraising activities the hotels has smashed their intended target, raising vital funds for cancer patients in Wales.
The hotel ran a full calendar of fundraising events and initiatives throughout the year in order to raise as much money as possible for the Whitchurch based charity. Staff from Park Plaza Cardiff trekked up Pen-y-Fan, took on a gruelling 10k cycle challenge and even auctioned off one of Laguna Kitchen’s chefs to cook for twelve guests at the winning bidders home.
Velindre Cancer Centre is the largest non-surgical cancer hospital in Wales, providing support and care to cancer patients for nearly 60 years. Velindre’s support is invaluable for cancer patients and their family as they struggle with the hugely debilitating disease.
Speaking about the hotel’s fundraising efforts, Margaret Waters, General Manager of Park Plaza said: “We’re over the moon with the money we have raised for Velindre. It’s been a fantastic year of fundraising and our staff have put their all into every event, from the bake sales to the exhausting exercise challenges.
“Velindre really goes the extra mile for people in Wales as they struggle with cancer and we are proud to support them in their efforts.”
The money raised by Park Plaza Cardiff will be used to fund ground breaking research, and buy specialist equipment, providing the staff at the centre with the most up to date training and techniques available. In addition, the money will continue to provide support for every patient and their families as they deal with cancer.
Andrew Morris, Head of Fundraising at Velindre Cancer Centre said: “We’d like to extend our thanks to Park Plaza Cardiff for all their hard work over the past year. It was wonderful to be part of their 10th anniversary celebrations. Their exceptional support means that we now have much needed funds so that we can continue to provide excellent care, support and treatment to patients and their families affected by cancer in South Wales.”
Martyn Williams, former Wales international and Velindre patron said: “It’s fantastic to see such a well-known hotel supporting Velindre, continually raising awareness and funds for the charity and the patients it looks after.
“Their generous donation is hugely appreciated by everyone at Velindre.”
