BUSINESSES in Wales are being asked to support foster and kinship carers by funding a place on day-long master class for those working with traumatised children and young people.
Young people and children in Wales are currently in the midst of a mental health crisis. More children are being taken into care here than in England. According to Barnardos Cymru more than 5,000 children and young people are currently in care in Wales, enough to fill 225 classrooms.
Across the UK:
- 1 in 10 children and young people aged 5 – 16 suffer from a diagnosable mental health disorder – that is around three children in every class
* There has been a big increase in the number of young people being admitted to hospital because of self-harm. Over the last ten years this figure has increased by 68%.
* Nearly 80,000 children and young people suffer from severe depression
Many carers find the cost of developing their own skills prohibitive and are unable to attend courses or workshops to extend their knowledge.
In May, two of the UK’s leading voices on childhood trauma and former foster carers, Jane Evans and Mike Armiger, are holding an event in Cardiff to support those working with vulnerable children and young people.
Jane said: “When I talk about having been a local authority respite foster carer, people often tell me they would love to do the same but aren’t in a position to do so. If they do foster, the cost of any kind of course for personal development can be out of reach.
“By funding a place for a carer, this will directly help our most vulnerable children by supporting those who are giving them the lives they deserve.”
Jane, who is based in Wiltshire, and Mike, based in Newport, have decades of experience across education, fostering, health, domestic violence, parenting, early years, social care, sexual crime, therapeutic mentoring, coaching and much more.
Jane has worked directly with families with complex needs for over two decades, is a regular TV and radio expert and recently has given a TED talk on childhood anxiety. She’s a respected consultant on childhood trauma and anxiety, travelling nationally and internationally delivering training and support.
Mike runs M Armiger Training & Consultancy and his former roles include National Advisor on Behaviour for Welsh Joint authorities, Head of Educational Provisions for Looked After Children and advisor to child sexual crime teams with local police forces.
They are using their unique combination of expertise to deliver a practically-focused Master Class in Childhood Trauma in Cardiff on Friday May 13 from 9.30am at the Clayton Hotel, St Mary Street, Cardiff, Wales, CF10 1GD.
