A trio of former University of Nottingham students are going from strength-to-strength after launching the UK’s first halal food delivery service, Halalivery.
Rawan Abu-Ishira (26), Amur Anzorov (24) and Tawfiq Abu-Khajil (22) are the brains behind the award-winning Halalivery app, which allows users to order halal food straight to their doorstep. Having individually moved from Russia, Palestine and Jordan to study in the UK, the young team met whilst studying at Nottingham University, came up with the idea for the business after finding it difficult to source halal food.
“Our main aim is not to be another commercial app in the market – we aspire to building a clearer image on halal meat and build a long-lasting community that truly reflects the image behind halal food,” says Abu-Khajil, Co-Founder and Chief Operating Officer of Halalivery.
Since winning national recognition through the Ideas Mean Business competition -a campaign in partnership with the Government’s Innovate UK project and The Prince’s Trust designed to support young people to make their ideas a reality- the fast-growing startup has partnered with over 25 restaurants, three butcheries and three groceries, with plans to expand to other UK cities in the near future.
Ian Campbell, Executive Chair, of Innovate UK says: ‘Innovation is the life blood of the UK, driving economic growth and creating a positive social impact. The government’s modern Industrial Strategy aims to break down the barriers that prevent talent from growing and potential being realised, engaging young people in business innovation is a crucial part of that. In telling their stories, we now hope to demonstrate to other young people from all backgrounds right across the UK that they too could transform an idea into a viable business.”
