On a normal day Chapter would welcome hundreds of visitors – for exhibitions, film screenings, theatre performances, gigs, educational events or to chat to friends and colleagues over a coffee.
The closure not only impacts the arts centre’s future and their ability to offer a wide range of artistic activity for the public, it also reverberates across the many artists, freelancers, businesses and organisations who are based within the building.
Chapter is proud to generate 82% of their own income with public subsidy representing just 18% of their turnover. This unique funding model usually plays to Chapter’s strength however in these extraordinary and unprecedented times, it is now one of the principal threats to their future survival.
Chapter is actively looking at the announcements made by the Chancellor, and talking to the Arts Council and Welsh Government, but at present the threat of total closure for the Chapter charity, the livelihoods of 110 full and part time staff and those of the artists and communities that they support, is a very real one.
Chapter urgently needs help to ensure its survival. Whilst shut and unable to trade, their losses are escalating quickly. They need to raise funds to keep them viable as a charity beyond Covid-19 and to retain all staff through this difficult time. They are due to celebrate their 50th birthday in 2021.
