A NEW APP THAT AIMS TO BUILD ON WALES’ LANDFILL REDUCTION SUCCESS

06/05/2016

Welsh councils reported a 30% fall in the weight of landfill over the last three years and now the launch this month (April) of SkipAdvisor, a free iPhone app for people planning home improvement projects, aims to further reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill.

Developed by Constructing Excellence in Wales (CEW), a Welsh Government supported initiative, SkipAdvisor provides householders with advice and guidance so that they can make sure that any waste leaving their property is dealt with lawfully.

“Anyone who takes control of waste from a new-build or renovation, whether is it is a builder or a homeowner, must be licensed to do so,” explains Paul Jennings of CEW.

“This is where SkipAdvisor can help as it locates your nearest Green Compass waste management company, which set out clear and accurate data on how much waste is being kept out of landfill.”

The app also has a useful project estimator which lets users assess how much waste a renovation is likely to generate so that skip disposal can be allowed for before work begins. Best practice guidance is also available on the app.

As well as bricks, blocks and rubble, waste includes electrical installation, plumbing, plastering, joinery, floor and wall covering, painting and glazing and material used in building completion and finishing.

“Wales has been leading the way when it comes to reducing levels of waste disposed to landfill and we hope that SkipAdvisor will prove to be a useful tool for homeowners so that they have the peace of mind that any waste leaving their property is dealt with responsibly,” adds Paul.
