National Campaign “Britain Has Spirit” Calls on Great British Public to Vote for Most Deserving Local Volunteers

07/09/2016

Britain Has Spirit, a nationwide search for the UK’s best volunteers, is calling for the public to cast their votes having today announced finalists for both individual and group categories.

This crucial next stage in the hunt for Britain’s community spirit relies on public votes for the national finalists, who hail from ten regions across the UK. The two overall Winners of ‘Regional Community Initiative of the Year’ and ‘Regional Community Hero of the Year’, will each be awarded with £25,000 to go towards a local cause.

The campaign was launched in response to research by Together Mutual Insurance, which highlighted a gap in community spirit across the nation. Findings reveal that nearly half (47%) of Brits have never volunteered1. Chris McElligott, director at Together Mutual Insurance comments, “Celebrating local heroes who give up their precious spare time to help others, is a great way to encourage others by highlighting the great work volunteers do up and down the country every day. We have twenty very deserving finalists and we are all very excited to see the public get involved and help us find the most deserving volunteer group and individual to receive their £25,000, which will go to a well-loved cause close to their hearts.”

The campaign, fronted by TV favourite Gabby Logan, will culminate in an awards ceremony on Sunday 25 September in London, where the two national winners will be announced. Gabby Logan adds, “We have twenty amazing finalists all showcasing that Britain does indeed have community spirit. The Great British public now have a very important job to do, all of the finalists are worthy winners, so it’s incredibly important that each of you vote for your favourite to award them the national prize of £25,000. Think of the difference £25,000 could make to a community project!”
