TENDER PREY
Sing hallelujah for the long-awaited debut album from Tender Prey, the musical outfit led by Cardiff’s most excellent Laura Bryon. Having wandered through spells in King Alexander and as Le B, Tender Prey finds Bryon dealing in gut punches of garage blues, stark guitar confessionals and ghostly girl group clanging. After Marc Riley sessions and split singles with the great Jane Weaver, May sees the release (on Finders Keepers Records) of ‘Organ Calzone’: 12 songs recorded by Steve “Sweet Baboo” Black, featuring Emma of Islet on drums, and a pure treat of black humour and spectral thrills.

Swansea’s premier league garage miscreants, Heavy Petting Zoo also have a debut album arriving later this year, but in the meantime their live appearances speak for them best: discordant, surf-inflected guitars, whipsmart dynamics, and Amy Zachariah’s snarled-out vocals making a slightly deranged, Cramps-y party of any venue. Crystal Balloon & Moonlight Drive
Crystal Balloon is an alternative rock band from Chepstow, South Wales. They are Jack Stanton on guitar and vocals, Rob Beresford on bass and Eric Karvik on drums.
Their sound falls somewhere between Pearl Jam, Oasis, Manic Street Preachers and Bruce Springsteen. The bulk of the song writing is done by Jack whose influences have no limitations; whispers and echoes of all the music he listens to can be heard in his songs. As the rhythm section Eric and Rob provide a solid foundation, great feel and endless groove. Together the 3 of them create a pretty mean and righteous sound.
